Biography:

Vladimir Labedev has s tudied at the studio of Titov, St Petersburg (1909), at the workshop of Rubo (1911), at the studio of Bernstein and Shervud (1912-1914), and at the Academy of Arts (1912-1916).

From 1911 the artist has worked as an illustrator for magazines "Galchonok" (Young Jackdaw), "Satirikon", "Novy Satyrikon" (New Satyricon), "Argus" (1913-1917).

From 1912 he has participated in exhibitions.

He has lived and worked in St Petersburg - Leningrad.

Lebedev was a member of the avant-garde group OBMOKhU (Society of Young Artists) from 1918; a member of POSNOVIS / UNOVIS (Followers of New Art / Affirmers of New Art) group (1921-1922); and then of the Four Arts group (from 1928).

Lebedev has taught at the SVOMAS (Free Workshops) in Petrograd (1918-1921).

With Mayakovsky and Cheremnykh, the artist has designed propaganda posters for the ROSTA Windows (1920-1921).

He has served as art editor for OGIZ / DETGIZ (The State Publishing House of Children's Books), and worked as illustrator for children's books.

The atist has participated in exhibitions abroad, including Paris (1925, 1931).

In 1936 Lebedev, together with the artist Vladimir Konashevich, were named "Comprachicoses from Art", and "artists-daubers" for the avant-guard style of their book illustrations for children. Their books already finished of S.Marshak and K.Chukovsky were destroyed. From this time V.Lebedev has never exhibited as painter during his life, and has changed his style of book illustration to realistic. He had illustrated hundreds of books.

In the years of the World War II, Lebedev has worked as a poster artist for the TASS Windows (1942-1945).

Vladimir Lebedev was honored with the rank of Honored Art Worker (1945), the People Artist of Russian Federation (1966), and a Member Correspondent of the Academy of Arts of USSR (April 1967).

He died on November 21st 1967.

His personal shows were held once in Leningrad (1928), and again, post mortem, in the Russian Museum (1968).
