Biography:
Mikhail Vassilyevich Nesterov was born may 1889 in a merchant's family in Ufa.
He has studied at the MUZhVZ (Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture) under V.Perov, A.Savrassov and I.Prianishnikov (1877-1881 and 1884-1886), and at the Academy of Arts in St.Petersburg (1981-1884) under P.Tchistiakov.
Was awarded the Big Silver Medal of the Academy of Arts in 1886, and the Prize in OPKh competition in 1887 (Society for the Encouragement of the Art).
From 1889 the artist participated in exhibitions including TPKh (Fellowship of Traveling Art Exhibitions - The Wanderers), World of Art, exhibition of "36 Artists".
Was selected as member of the Academy of Arts council.
Nesterov painted portraits, landscapes, historical and genre compositions, painted church walls, worked on easel graphics and made illustrations for books and journals. Beginning from genre and historical theme, he has come to his own theme and style, orthodox-religious, and to individual manner of painting: high, poetic, decorative and symbolic.
He traveled a lot from 1899, visited Italy, France, Austria, Germany, Poland numerous times. Visited Russian North, Volga, Caucasus, Crimea.
Was awarded the rank of Honored Art Worker of RSFSR (Russian Federation) at his 80-th birthday occasion, 30-th May1942.
Mikhail Vassilyevich Nesterov died of a stroke on 18-th October 1942, in Moscow.
