The Ministry of Culture and Mass Communications of the RF and the Tretyakov Gallery present the exhibition "Nikolai Chernyshev. 1885-1973." to celebrate the artist's 120th birthday. Selected works of about 25 paintings and 15 graphic works from the Tretyakov Gallery and from the family collections, created during the period from 1900s to 1960s, are shown.

Nikolai Chernyshev is a renown member of the "Makovetz" group. He was a painter, graphic artist, monumentalist and author of works on fresco painting technology. His work, deeply lyrical and filled with genuine honest emotion, demonstrates faithful adherence to cultural tradition and the highest principles of artistic mastery.

The artist's individual artistic language is a merge between the Moscow school of painting with the interest to the life of nature and the light and air surrounding it, studies in analytic art, and the fresco traditions.

For many years the theory and practice of the monumental art have drawn the artist's attention. He has become one of the country's leading experts in this field. This resulted in the writing of a number of books, articles and reports, the founding of monumental workshops and a line of works. In the late 1950s he has turned to mosaics and his work here also spurred development in this technique in Russian art.

In one of his works Chernyshev wrote: "The artist's spirit is like Aeolian harp... One must listen carefully to the chaos of sounds in order to find one attuned to oneself. And this search must not be done for the sake of originality, but for clarification of one's own images and emotions, out of which the artist's soul is made".
